The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art’s collection is at the beginning of its story. The story begins with a collector—George Lucas—and his passion for collecting narrative art in many media.
Mr. Lucas’s collection provides the seed from which the Museum’s collection will grow for decades to come. From that foundation, the curators of the Museum will build a collection that will unfold like any great work: with greater depth and breadth, and diversity in both media and maker, and characters as varied as the tellers.
The goal of the Museum is to house a collection that tells stories from many places and times—some you will recognize, others that will become new favorite tales.
The breadth of the collection will provide opportunities to present an unprecedentedly expansive and open definition of art, acknowledging that all visual art forms can make a meaningful connection with viewers. Imagine a place where a fan of Norman Rockwell’s familiar art makes a meaningful connection with a cutting edge 21st-century digital animator.
The Museum’s holdings, while an actively expanding collection, look at art through three lenses:
The History of Narrative Art features traditional paintings by Edgar Degas, Winslow Homer and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, as well as a broad range of illustration, children’s art, comic art and photography from many periods and cultures.
The Art of Cinema explores all facets of cinematic art and its design processes, including concept art, storyboards, set design, props, costume and fashion, animation and visual effects.
Digital Art features new technologies and media from digital cinema to digital architecture, bringing together works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Zaha Hadid and Pixar Animation, to name a few.
