This painting by Boris Vallejo was created for the cover of The Lavalite World (1977), the fifth book in Philip José Farmer’s World of Tiers series. It features the story’s two protagonists, Kickaha and Anana, as they battle to escape a volatile, geologically unstable planet through an interdimensional portal guarded by the sinister Lord Urthona. Vellejo’s lifelong engagement with bodybuilding is reflected in the glistening musculature of his figures, many of which were modeled after photographs and sketches of physique models and competitive weightlifters, including his wife, Julie Bell.
