Jacob Lawrence

The Ant and the Grasshopper

1969

Jacob Lawrence brought a lasting connection to Aesop’s Fables to this series of twenty-three black-and-white illustrations. The ancient Greek stories, in which animal characters act out human behavior to teach moral lessons, stayed with Lawrence throughout his life. To illustrate each fable, he began by sketching human figures, then gradually transformed them into animal characters. The slow and deliberate process produced bold, simplified forms.
