Enric (Enrique Torres-Prat)

Queen of the Beasts

ca. 1990

Vampirella is a superhero created by Forest Ackerman and Trina Robbins, who first appeared in a magazine of the same name in 1969. The artist Enrique Torres-Prat, who worked professionally under the names Enric and Enrich, painted his first Vampirella cover in 1972. He would go on to contribute dozens of cover illustrations of the titular heroine, playing a central role in establishing her appearance and style. In this 2003 rendition, Torres-Prat depicts Vampirella in her signature red bodysuit with flared white collar and black patent boots, mounted on a lion, as she leans backward and tosses her hair before the full moon. The image presents the character as both a figure of great strength and independence and a sexualized pin-up aimed at the magazine’s largely male readership.
