Saturday Football of the Radio

1942

Steven Dohanos (born 1907, Lorain, Ohio) studied at the Cleveland School of Art. He became one of the most prolific cover artists for The Saturday Evening Post, contributing more than 125 covers between 1942 and 1963. His images centered on scenes of ordinary American life, rendered with close attention to detail and setting.

Saturday Football Over the Radio portrays several figures gathered in a domestic scene around a game-day broadcast. Objects and figures are given equal weight — beer bottles, upholstered furniture, and the radio at the room center.

The scene was produced in the years following World War II, when American manufacturers were eager to connect their products with images of home life and normalcy. Covers like this one ran in The Saturday Evening Post at a time when the line between a story and an advertisement was purposely blurred to set the stage for commerce.
