Jim Steranko, a comic artist, writer, and illustrator, is best known for his work on Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the 1960s, where he brought elements of pop art, psychedelia, and surrealism to superhero comics.
When George Lucas was developing Raiders of the Lost Ark, he turned to Steranko to interpret the look of its hero. Working from lean notes describing Indiana Jones as a "rugged, pulp-type hero," part Humphrey Bogart from The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and part Zorro, Steranko produced four pre-production paintings. The images established the look that would define the character: a leather jacket, a felt hat, and a whip.
