Frank Frazetta produced this cover illustration for a 1970 edition of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s 1917 A Princess of Mars, released as part of Doubleday’s Science Fiction Book Club. Frazetta had become well-known for his covers for Burroughs’s Tarzan novels, and for this publication he was credited as the illustrator on the title page, directly beneath the author’s name.
Here, Frazetta depicts the hero of the Barsoom series, John Carter, alongside Dejah Thoris, the Princess referred to in the book’s title. The image’s triangular composition, with the heroic male figure at the top center, exemplifies the artist’s mature style. This visual signature was referenced and emulated by numerous artists and filmmakers in the 1970s and 1980s.
